Follow your heart 

There is no specific plan for success in theatre; trust your instincts and follow what excites you.

Stay curious

College is the perfect time to dive into the many facets of theatre. Pursue what interests you because it's much harder to do once you graduate.

Seek hands-on experience

Get involved in student-produced theatre, school productions, and community projects. Real-world practice is invaluable.

Engage with theatre everywhere

Stay connected with theatre by watching every play and musical you can, read plays, and attend events. Learning doesn't stop outside of the classroom.

Network!

Networking is the key to a career in theatre. Build connections with industry professionals, professors, and peers-- they could all help you seek out jobs and opportunities later on.

Keep your network alive

Treat your network like a plant; nuture it by checking in every few months to maintain meaningful connections.

Appreciate everyone

Simple gestures like saying "please" and "thank you", bringing someone a coffee, and going above and beyond will all go a long way with bosses, professors, and colleagues.

Send thank-you notes

Always follow up after interviews, meetings, or helpful encounters with a note. It leaves a lasting impression.

Value your peers too

Connections aren't just about senior professionals-- building relationships with classmates and other students is just as valuable.

Be open with your goals

Goal Setting

Don't keep your aspirations a secret; share them with friends, family, and mentors. You never know who might help.

Get to know industry news

Stay informed on what's happening by reading theatre news and subscribing to relevant newsletters.

Ask questions & share ideas

Speak up, ask questions, and don't hold back your ideas. Every voice is valuable.

Be creative with opportunites 

If you can't find a role that fits your passion, create one. There's alwasy room for innovation and change in theatre.

Link theatre to other interests

Connect your theatre skills with other hobbies and experiences-- they're more transferable than you think.
